Behind the Scenes - 'Wolf Bait' by warbirdphotographer
Behind the Scenes - 'Wolf Bait'
A behind the scenes look at yesterday's Real Nose Art recreation of 'Wolf Bait'. Starting with the original nose art the idea was to get a recreation as close as possible... all be it with some variances to the model. In the future I might try and get more exact recreations like my Petty Project.

After getting the model posed and in a 'somewhat similar' outfit to start with I pieced together Daisy into a final shot. There were several shots of the model used in different outfits that were used to make the final lacey lingerie that the original Nose Art had. From there, her image was taken and digitally altered to have a painted look with the 1940s 'lit from within' style of art that was popular with artists like George Petty and Vargas.

From there I hand drew the cartoon wolf using the original Nose Art as a reference. I couldn't find a modern matching font to the WOLF BAIT lettering, so I ended up also recreating the font by hand.

I searched through an archive of blank warbird panel/nose photos I have amassed over the years and found a shot of a B-25 nose that didn't have any nose art on it from an airshow. Since the original Nose Art was from a B-25, I figured this was fitting to use however I could have used any non-painted aircraft's skin.

Overlaying all the elements together on the photo of the B-25 skin, I used various techniques and blending modes to simulate paint on a metal surface and how it would adhere to panel lines and rivets. The final product was slightly aged to give it a better overall blend. The whole process took about two days of on and off again work from the model's shot to the final product.

Nose Art Recreations - Wolf Bait by warbirdphotographer
Nose Art Recreations - Wolf Bait
Something brand new for today's pinup... a recreation of a REAL Nose Art from WW2! This pinup is based on a North American B-25 Mitchell named 'Wolf Bait' which was part of the 71st Bomb Squadron, 38th Bomb Group (Wolf Pack) and features model 'Daisy'. This image is made from various photos put together to replicate the nose art with digital artwork and photomanipulation used to simulate the painted look on the side of a bomber. Colors are best guesses as many of the WW2 nose art photos are black and white. The original WW2 nose art photo was used only as a reference. While the model is a manipulated photo, the animated wolf and Wolf Bait fonts were hand recreated. The background is a shot of a real B-25 Mitchell without nose art. All the elements were blended together to appear really painted such as paint textures, colorization, metal surface blending, and more.

Pinups - Coca Cola by warbirdphotographer
Pinups - Coca Cola
Today's airbrushed style pinup photo features Anna and the simplistic style Coca Cola advertisements! From the 1930s into the 1940s, Coca Cola pushed the 'Coca Cola Girl' into their advertising quite heavily. Often doing some everyday task from working in a factory, serving in the military, or even playing at the beach these gals were always taking a break from their current task to have a Coke (in order to 'Refresh' themselves before continuing on with that task). This retro advertisement is part of the ongoing Coca Cola original ad recreations. The colors, fonts, language, and graphics of these have been very carefully researched and recreated to match the original style of the advertisements.

Pinups - 1939 Ford De Luxe by warbirdphotographer
Pinups - 1939 Ford De Luxe
Today's airbrushed style pinup photo features Rachel in this classic car themed pinup! Armed with her swimsuit and LIFE magazine, Rachel is ready to have a nice day at the beach! Of course, it's her trusty 1939 Ford Deluxe that will get her there! First introduced in 1938, the 'De Luxe Ford' was the middle man between their standard model cars and the higher end luxary models. The early 1938 models had a rounded hood which gave way in 1939 for the V-shaped grill with vertical bars. The 1940 model had a three part gill with horiztonal grill bars. The De Luxe series was actually a separate line of cars from the other brands Ford had at the time. In 1941 the De Luxe series was joined by the Super De Luxe series, however both of these were not used as separate line cars and became part of the Ford lineup.
